Finland Ubicom
Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation, Tekes
VTT Technical Research Centre
University of Oulu

Tekes, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation is the main government financing and expert organisation for research and technological development in Finland. Tekes finances industrial R&D projects as well as projects in universities and research institutes. Tekes especially promotes innovative, risk-intensive projects. Most of the funding is managed within technology programmes.

Tekes' Ubicom - Embedded ICT 2007 – 2013 programme focuses in ubiquitous computing and embedded systems areas. For the duration of seven years Ubicom budgeted total project volume for Finnish participants will be over 300 million euros whereof Tekes' public funding share is 120 million euros. The non Finnish partners are invited to join the projects to benefit on the mutual development.

Ubicom programme objectives are:

  1. Strengthen the expert research basis for future ubicom-solutions in collaborative research projects with close connections to international networks.
  2. Pilot new ubicom-technologies and consolidate platforms for commercialisation of new ubiquitous systems, products and services. The goal is to create new branches of industry and also improve the productivity and conditions in existing industries.

Tekes expects the programme to improve global market creation. Participating ICT and other industry will have opportunities to speed up commercialisation of new technologies and services. The level of research is expected to grow considerably jointly within international partnerships.

Two members of the Ubicom Program, VTT Research Centre and University of Oulu participate in the exhibition and they make presentation in the Seminar "Finland Ubicom" about "SmartTouch project piloting the emerging NFC technology" and "Urban Interactions (UBI) Research Program pursuing the vision of ubiquitous city", respectively.
